How Your Morning Routine Can Change Your Life: A Simple Guide
How Your Morning Routine Can Change Your Life
Hey there! Have you ever woken up, picked up your phone, scrolled through Instagram for 20 minutes, and then felt like you're running late the rest of the day? Yeah, we've all been there. It's like you're chasing your day instead of the other way around.
But what if I told you that the first 60 minutes of your day are like the foundation of a building? Well, if the foundation is shaky, the whole building wobbles, but if the foundation is solid, you can handle any storm that comes your way.
I know changing my morning routine was a total game-changer for me. I'm a former "snooze button addict," and I mean addict. I'd hit the snooze button three times, have a bath, drink some chai, and run out the door stressed out the rest of the day. Now, my morning routine is my "me time," and it's changed everything in my life.
Let's talk about how you can build a morning routine that actually works for you.
Why the Morning Matters So Much
Your brain is like a mobile phone battery. When you wake up, you are 100% charged. Everything you decide to do, like what to wear, what to eat, or even replying to an angry email, depletes your charge a little. This is called "decision fatigue."
By having a routine for the morning, you conserve your charge for the big decisions you will make later on. You won't waste time thinking of what to do next. You will just do it.
Benefits of a Solid Start:
• Less Stress: No need to rush and panic anymore.
• Improved Focus: You decide what's important before the world tells you what's important for you to focus on.
• Increased Energy: A little exercise and water can go a long way.
• Self-Development: It's the only time of the day where no one will be asking you for anything.
Simple Steps to Build Your Routine
You don’t have to wake up at 4:00 AM like a billionaire entrepreneur to achieve success in your routine. You just need a plan, and here are some simple habits you can combine and follow.
1. Hydrate Before You Caffeine
I know, I know—we Indians love our morning ginger tea or filter coffee. But after 7–8 hours of sleep, your body is thirsty. Before you have your chai, drink a big glass of water. It “wakes up” your internal organs and gets your digestion moving.
2. Move Your Body (Even a Little!)
You don’t have to hit the gym for two hours. Even 10 minutes of light stretching or a quick walk on the balcony can work wonders. My uncle always says, “A moving body stays young.” It gets the blood flowing to your brain, making you feel sharper.
3. Sunlight is Magic
Attempt to get some natural sunlight into your eyes within the first half-hour of waking up. It tells your brain, "Hey, it’s daytime!" which can help regulate your sleep cycle. You’ll actually feel tired when it’s time to go to bed at night.
4. The "No-Phone" Rule
This is the hardest one, but the most important. When you check your phone first thing, you’re letting other people’s problems, news, and socially curated lives into your brain.
Try this: Place your phone in another room or put it on "Do Not Disturb" until you complete your routine. Give yourself at least 30 minutes of peace.
My Personal Experience: The "Chai and Journal" Hack
I was in a state of utter chaos a few years ago, and a friend advised me to try journaling. I felt a bit silly at first and thought, "What am I going to write?" So, I began drinking tea and journaling in the morning. I would write down the following:
1. One thing I was thankful for (like a nice dinner the night before).
2. One big thing I wanted to accomplish in the day.
3. How I was feeling.
It took five minutes, but the "fog" in my head was gone, and I was no longer just busy; I was productive.

How to Make It Stick (The Indian Way)
We know we need to make time for this. We have families to attend to. We have to take care of our elderly parents. We have to get our kids ready for school. We have to travel long distances to get to work. How do we really make time for this?
• Start Small: Don't try to make 10 changes at once. Just start with something simple: drink water and avoid your phone for 10 minutes.
• Prepare the Night Before: Plan your clothes, pack your bag, and even plan breakfast. You want to conserve your "brain battery" for the morning.
• Involve the Family: If your spouse and kids know this is your "quiet time," they might respect it. You might even get them to have their own 5 minutes of quiet time!
A Final Word of Encouragement
Remember, your morning routine is a gift you give to yourself. It’s a way of telling the world, ‘My peace, my goals, they matter.’ You’ll see, when you take care of your morning, the rest of your day starts taking care of itself. You’ll be more loving towards your coworkers, more patient with your family, and more content with your life.
No more Monday motivation! Let’s start your morning routine tomorrow. Even if it’s just five minutes of deep breathing as you wait for the tea kettle to boil.
