Human: What Does It Really Mean to Be One of Us?
Human: What Does It Really Mean to Be One of Us?
Hello there, friend! Have you ever sat on a bench at a bustling railway station, perhaps with a cup of hot cutting chai in your hand, and simply watched people pass by? It is a very interesting experience, isn’t it? You see a school-going kid hurrying to board a local train, a grandma carrying a bag of fresh veggies, and a young office-goer staring at her phone.
However different our clothes, languages, and occupations may be, there is one thing that binds every single person on this planet: we are all human. But have you ever stopped to think about what this word really means? Is it simply a matter of having two arms and two legs, or is it something more?
Today, let’s sit down and have a heart-to-heart talk about the amazing, messy, and glorious experience of being human.
More Than Just Biology

In school, we were taught that we are Homo sapiens. We learned about our brains, our bones, and how we evolved. But being human is so much more than what is written in a science textbook.
Think about the last time you had a "gut feeling" or when your eyes were filled with tears during an emotional movie scene. That isn’t just biology; that is humanity. We are unique because we don’t just exist; we feel. We have this amazing ability to imagine things that don’t exist yet, to dream about the future, and to remember the past with a bit of "sweet-and-sour" nostalgia.
The Power of Connection
If there is one thing that characterizes the human experience, especially in a thriving nation like India, it is our connect with other people. We are social animals, after all. We live in families, we celebrate festivals with our neighbors, and we wait in long queues together (sometimes grumbling, sometimes making new friends!).
I recall a small incident from a few years ago. I was traveling in a crowded bus, and an elderly lady was struggling to manage her heavy bags. A young boy, who looked like he had just stepped out of school, got up and offered her his seat, then helped her manage her bags. They were strangers to each other. They didn't even speak the same language. But in that moment, they were connected through a small act of kindness.
This is the "Human Factor." We possess the ability to empathize—the capacity to understand and share the feelings of another human being. It is what enables us to construct a society, help strangers in a flood, or simply brighten up the day of someone who is having a bad time.
The "Bhel Puri" of Emotions
Life is not always a Bollywood film with a happy ending and a dance number. Being human means experiencing a combination of emotions, a bit like a plate of Bhel Puri. It’s sweet, it’s spicy, it’s tangy, and sometimes it’s a bit too much to swallow!
• Happiness: The joy of relishing your mother’s homemade parathas after a long time.
• Fear: The nervousness before a job interview or a big exam.
• Sadness: The heavy heart we feel when we lose someone we love.
• Hope: The small voice that whispers to us, “tomorrow will be better.”
We usually try to suppress our "negative" emotions, but being human means embracing all of them. It is perfectly fine to be sad. It is perfectly fine to be scared. These emotions do not make you weak; they make you human.
Why We Are Different (And Why It’s Good)
One of the most amazing things about human beings is our diversity. Just look around you! There are thousands of cultures, thousands of languages, and millions of ways to boil a potato.
Sometimes, we use these differences to separate us. We talk about "us" and "them." But if you think about it, our differences are actually our biggest strength. Think about a garden with only one variety of brown flowers. Isn’t it boring? A garden is beautiful because it has red roses, yellow marigolds, and white jasmine.
In the same way, the human species is beautiful because we are all different. Our differences allow us to solve problems, create art, and see the world in new ways.
The Mistakes We Make
Let’s face it—being human also means being flawed. We make mistakes. We say things we don’t mean. We forget birthdays. We take "shortcuts" that lead us into trouble.
But here is the secret: making mistakes is how we learn. No human being is born knowing everything. We "fall down seven times and stand up eight." Our capacity to admit when we are wrong and try to do better is perhaps the most "human" thing we can do. It’s called growth.
The Future: Humans and Technology
We live in a world filled with smartphones, artificial intelligence, and robots. Sometimes it feels like we are becoming more and more like machines, scrolling and clicking away. But a machine cannot feel the warmth of the sun on its face. A robot cannot feel the pride of a father watching his daughter graduate.
As the world becomes more digital, our "human" traits—such as creativity, compassion, and ethics—are more valuable than ever. Technology is meant to be a tool for us, but it can never replace the human touch.
How to Be "Better" Humans
You may ask, "How can I be a better human?" It is easier than you think. You don’t have to do something amazing.
1. Listen More: Actually listen when someone is speaking to you, rather than looking at your phone.
2. Be Kind: A simple "thank you" to the delivery boy or the security guard makes a huge difference.
3. Be Patient: Everyone is fighting a battle that you know nothing about.
4. Keep Learning: Stay curious about the world and the people in it.
A Final Thought
At the end of the day, being human is a blessing. We are the only species on the planet that can tell stories, build skyscrapers, and think about the stars. We have the ability to destroy, but more importantly, we have the ability to create and love.
So, the next time you feel frustrated with the world, just remember: you are part of a huge, ancient, and amazing family. You are human, and that is enough.
